This meeting with António Guterres was an opportunity to highlight the UN's inadequate approach towards Israel following the October 7 massacre and the organization's late and imperfect response to sexual crimes committed by Hamas terrorists.
On March 7, 2024, members of J7, the antisemitism task force formed by leaders of the seven largest Jewish communities, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in a series of meetings on the sidelines of the Anti-Defamation League's Never Is Now conference in New York.
During their meeting with António Guterres at UN headquarters, the J7 leaders highlighted the sharp rise in antisemitism in the world since October 7, the fate of the hostages in Gaza, the inadequate approach of the UN towards Israel following the October 7 massacre and the organization's delayed and flawed response to Hamas' sex crimes against Israeli women.
Delegates from seven countries also highlighted the need for the UN to address the systemic failures of UNRWA and called on the Secretary-General to consider alternative options to address humanitarian needs in Gaza.
J7 members released the following statement:
During our meeting with the UN Secretary-General, we called for UN action in response to the explosion of anti-Semitism across the world, which threatens Jewish communities.
We urged the Secretary-General to use the power of his position to work for the immediate release of the 134 hostages still held in Gaza and to address the systemic failures of UNRWA.
