President Sarkozy receives CRIF

The Head of State noted there had been a drop in the number of anti-Semitic acts but reaffirmed his determination to “carry on the fight”. Richard Prasquier drew the attention of Nicolas Sarkozy to the risk of “anti-Semitic language becoming common place”.

To resist stereotypes but also to prepare the future, the President of CRIF underscored the importance in his eyes of the state’s commitment to supporting the memorial at the Camp des Milles, near Aix-en-Provence. As France’s only still intact internment and deportation camp for Jews during the Holocaust, the Milles memorial should open its doors at the end of 2008 to become “a venue for civic education and culture”. Nicolas Sarkozy informed Richard Prasquier that the State’s contribution to the operating budget of the future Camp des Milles would be 500,000 euros per year.

During this meeting, Nicolas Sarkozy insisted that he would not slow down his efforts to obtain Israel’s entry in the International Francophone Organisation and confirmed that he has invited Shimon Peres, Israel’s president, for a state visit in March 2008.
