CRIF SUPPORTS JUSTICE FOR JEWS FROM ARAB COUNTRIES

Under the aegis of the WOJAC (World Organization of Jews from Arab Countries) and at the invitation of the CRIF, an international symposium of the JJAC (Justice for Jews from Arab Countries) was held in Paris on 6th June last. Sixteen representatives from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Israel, Belgium, Italy and France met to launch an international campaign to raise awareness on the «forgotten refugees», those Jews who have left Arab countries, often in trying conditions and totally destitute and who have been welcomed in Israel in large numbers.

Moderated by Stanley Urman, Executive Director of the JJAC, this important meeting was attended by S.E. Nissim Zvili, Israeli ambassador in France and by Mrs. Dina Sorek, Junior Minister at the Israeli embassy.

Participants agreed to organize «a one-month campaign on Jewish refugees from Arab countries» in March 2006, during which Jewish communities from around the world will be invited to «talk about the dispossession and eviction of Jewish communities on Arab lands before and after the creation of the State of Israel», «to underscore the special role played by the State of Israel in integrating Jews from Arab countries» and to «spread the message that redressing the injustice suffered by Jews in the Arab countries is an integral part of the solution to the problem of refugees in the Middle East and a prerequisite in the final settlement of the Israeli-Arab conflict».

The CRIF, which has decided to take an active part in the work of the JJAC, was represented by Jean-Pierre Allali, a member of the Executive Bureau.
