CRIF MEETS UNION OF MAGISTRATES

CRIF's Chairman Roger Cukierman met with the representatives of the French Union of Magistrates, the main union of the French judges. "This was a very frank conversation," said Cukierman. "We made some suggestions aimed at a better understanding of our positions. We would like the magistrates to understand better the Jewish community and the magistrates would like us to understand their difficulties." Anti-Semitic aggressions should be severely punished under French law. However, anti-Semitic verbal abusers and graffiti writers are seldom prosecuted. Lawyer Michel Zaoui, in charge of the legal department of the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism said, "One cannot always blame the Middle-East conflict. Part of the so-called intellectuals and some stand-up comedians push forward their anti-Semitic speech under the cover of anti-Zionism. This is often very difficult to explain to magistrates," said Zaoui.
